What is the cost per 1000 people

Typically, a shallow well costs about $3000 and serves 300 people. It costs about $10000. to serve 1000 people or $10/person for daily water ration for lifetime of the well (10 years).  Other larger organizations offer similar services and have projected costs of $65,000 to serve 1000 people with shallow wells. Life expectancy is 10 years.

Who maintains the wells once commissioned

A local water committee is established to manage and maintain the well once it is commissioned without local oversite.  These committees are often church oriented and managed.

Does the water cost anything to the people?

All water belongs to the people in the area.  Locations are selected based on their normal habits of gathering and accessing water.  All water is free for anyone that requires water. The water is limited by the water table, well construction, and weather conditions.
